Ingredients You’ll Need

  • 2 lbs ground beef (or venison)
  • ½ medium onion, diced
  • Granulated Garliic (or galic powder) – Just a dash
  • Dash of salt
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 2 (15 oz) cans tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

Cheese Filling

  • 2 eggs
  • 15 oz ricotta cheese
  • ¾ cup grated parmesan cheese (divided)
  • 2 tbsp parsley
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For Layering

  • About 9 oven-ready lasagna noodles (3 per layer in a 9×13 pan)
  • 1 lb mozzarella cheese (sliced or shredded)

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with the diced onion over medium-high heat. While cooking, add a sprinkle of garlic powder and a dash of salt.
  3. Drain the excess fat, then return the meat and onions to the pot.
  4. Stir in diced tomatoes, tomato paste, tomato sauce, and Italian seasoning. Simmer on low for 15 minutes.
  5. While the sauce simmers, mix the cheese filling: whisk 2 eggs, then stir in ricotta, ½ cup parmesan, parsley, and black pepper until smooth.
  6. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of a 9×13 baking dish. Place 3 oven-ready noodles across the bottom.
  7. Spread ⅓ of the cheese filling on top. Add ⅓ of the mozzarella. Spoon on ⅓ of the meat sauce.
  8. Repeat layers two more times (noodles → cheese filling → mozzarella → meat sauce).
  9. Finish with the remaining sauce, mozzarella, and a sprinkle of parmesan.
  10. Cover loosely with foil (tent it so it doesn’t touch the cheese) and bake for 25 minutes.
  11. Remove foil and bake another 5–10 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  12. Rest for 10–15 minutes before serving.

Complete the meal with my southern green beans! Get the recipe here.
